JOB VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

There is position available for: Water Technician/Operator

PAY SCALE: CA8               Min                 Mid                 Max   

                                                $1,757             $2,196             $2,635  

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess all of the skills and abilities listed under this section on the job description to be considered for this position. 

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience in maintenance of mechanical equipment.
  • Experience in operating light equipment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico operator’s license.
  • Experience equivalent to one (1) year full-time mechanical/plumbing maintenance and repair work preferred.
  • Must obtain and maintain State of New Mexico Water Operator certification as follows:

18 months       Level 1 water   

3 years             Level 2 water/level 1 wastewater

6 years             Level 3 water/level 2 wastewater

9 years             Level 4 /level 2 wastewater 

DUTIES: This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in the classification. 

  •  Reads meters of all residential/commercial water system customers on a regularly scheduled basis to determine the amount of water use for which customers will be billed.

  • Repairs non-working/malfunctioning water meters by disassembling meters, identifying problems/malfunctions, replacing parts and making adjustments and reassembling the meter.
  • Replaces non-working/malfunctioning water meters and associated valves/meter boxes in the field to ensure accurate determination of customer usage and facilitate meter repair and maintenance.
  • Tests new and repaired water meters for accuracy using a variety of meter calibration equipment.
  • Answers customer inquiries/complaints regarding water usage and general water system operations.
  • Flushes water system periodically and/or in response to customer complaints.
  • On call evening and weekend work may be required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, SKILLS and OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: Possessing some or all of the skills and abilities listed in this section will make a candidate more competitive. 

  •  Knowledge of water meter locations for all residential and commercial water system customers in the City of Artesia.

  • Ability to operate computerized meter reading equipment.
  • Knowledge of procedures, tools and equipment used to remove and install water meters and associated valves and meter boxes.
  • Knowledge of water meter repair techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of water meter calibration, procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of names and location of the City of Artesia’s streets.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, procedures and guidelines.
  • Skill in repairing non-working/malfunctioning water meters.
