INFORMATION FOR PROPERTY OWNERS WITHIN THE CITY OF ARTESIA
On February 13, 2007, the Artesia City Council passed Ordinance 744 which deals with the numbering of houses within the city limits. This ordinance was enacted for the safety and well being of our citizens. This ordinance will enable the Police and Fire Departments to respond faster in emergencies and citizens will have much better service from other city departments and utility companies. Ordinance 744 states that: each structure within the city limits shall have address numbers placed within three (3) feet of the front door. If such placement is not possible or visible due to the features of the structure, the numbers shall be posted in the nearest alternate location as is clearly seen from the street. For the back (alley) side of the property, address numbers shall be placed as close to the alley as is possible in order to be clearly visible at all times. All address numbers shall be at least four (4) inches in height and be legible at all times, both day and night. For the back yard (alley) placement, here are some suggestions: If you have a chain-link fence in your back yard, you might take a scrap piece of lumber, make a plate for your number to fit on, attach numbers to the board and hang the board on fence close to water meter or gas meter. If you have a solid fence, attach the numbers on the fence or gate, closest to water or gas meter. You may want to use a stencil and spray paint your number on your masonry or wood fence. WARNING: Free hand numbering could be considered graffiti. If you have no fence, and you can plainly see the back door, attach the number beside door. Ordinance 744 allows you six (6) months to bring your house into compliance. After September 1, 2007, if the address numbers are not in place, you could be fined according to Title 1, Chapter 4 of the Artesia Municipal Code.
